The Szewalski Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences evolved in 1956 from the Department of Turbomachinery – an autonomous unit of the Academy, existing already at this time in the premises of the Gdansk University of Technology. The original goal was to support the emerging Polish turbomachinery industry by a highly qualified scientific research resource. Since then the research scope has been substantially enhanced. Nowadays, the Institute employs 213 co-workers, including 117 members of the scientific and techno-scientific staff. Research is conducted in 5 research centres active in such areas as fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics and heat transfer, plasma physics, laser technique, machine mechanics, tribology and diagnostics of power sector machinery. The Institute is authorised to award the PhD and DSc degrees.

The hydropower oriented research is conducted at two departments in the Centre for Hydrodynamics. Altogether 11 co-workers are involved, including 1 full professor and 6 PhDs. Their activities encompass performance and diagnostic tests of hydraulic equipment in the field and under lab conditions, design concepts of small hydropower installations, design studies of hydraulic machinery and structures, hydraulic transient and residual lifetime assessments of penstocks. Design of hydraulic turbines is generally restricted to small units. The IMP PAN experience on impeller pumps in turbining regime dates from late seventies of the last century. Throughout eighties extensive studies on enhancing mixed-flow PAT performance by modifying the impeller and spiral case geometry were conducted.
